Athlete’s guide

XTERRA Bromont 2025

MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANIZATION

The organising committee would like to thank you for taking part in the sixth edition of the XTERRA Bromont cross-triathlon.

We’re proud and excited to bring you another colourful, festive event in the exceptional setting of Bromont’s Parc des Sommets and Parc Equestre Olympique (OEP).

This participant’s guide will explain the logistical aspects, safety measures and courses for the different competition formats in triathlon and duathlon, mountain biking, gravel biking and trail running.

Once again this year, we’re offering 5km, 10km and 20km trail races. The gravel bike formats will also be offered in triathlon and duathlon formats. Finally, the Discovery format (super sprint) will be offered in a triathlon version.

And let’s not forget the Youth and Children’s formats, which will give everyone the chance to try out or challenge themselves in the fun of an XTERRA event, with distances to suit all levels of difficulty.

Bromont’s vast network of high-quality trails enables us to design courses that are both challenging and accessible, fun and well-balanced.

For the triathlon and duathlon formats, the mountain bike course, mostly on single-track trails, will pass over one of the peaks in the trail network to offer a good challenge and spectacular views. The race course will take place on the site of the Olympic Equestrian Park and in the magnificent setting of the Oak Mountain sector. The gravel bike course will criss-cross some of the region’s most scenic gravel roads. The standard and long-distance formats will each comprise two loops of the course and two passes through the main venue. The sprint and middle-distance formats will use the same routes, with a single loop.

As for the trail courses on Saturday, all the distances will start with the 5km course identical to the triathlon and duathlon. The 10km and 20km trails will continue in the Parc des Sommets mountain area. The 20km course will include 3 summits with spectacular views.

XTERRA Bromont is part of the worldwide XTERRA circuit and will be offering qualifying places for the 2026 XTERRA World Championships to be held in New Mexico in September.

We would like to thank the Town of Bromont and the entire community for their exceptional collaboration. Our main partners are Parc des Sommets, Action Conservation du Bassin Versant du Lac Bromont, Centre National de Cyclisme de Bromont, Bromont Montagne d’Expériences, Tourisme Bromont, BRIX and Maxi.

A huge thank you to our invaluable volunteers who make this event possible, who support and encourage you every step of the way. Without their essential contribution, none of this would be possible. Please thank them and be courteous to them at all times.

Our thanks also go to the owners of private land who grant us a right of way to optimise our courses, as well as all our other partners, suppliers and collaborators.

We hope that the event will live up to your expectations and that you will take away some unforgettable memories. You can also take advantage of the opportunity to stay in our beautiful city and take advantage of the variety of outdoor activities, restaurants, spas and high-quality shops to suit all tastes.

Welcome and enjoy the event!

COMPETITION AND EVENT SITE

The main venue for the event will be the Olympic Equestrian Park (OEP). A second secondary site, located at the Lac Bromont beach, will be used only on Sunday for the triathlon swimming events and the start of the first duathlon running segment.

Here’s how the 2 sites will be used and the logistics between them:

For the entire duration of the event and all events combined:

The main site of the Olympic Equestrian Park will include :

  • parking for all participants
  • welcome and registration
  • Saturday evening pre-race meeting
  • Saturday competition starts
  • T2 transition zone (cycling → running)
  • the medical base
  • the finish area
  • refreshment stands
  • the post-race area with a marquee, a foodtruck (present on both days), exhibitors including bike mechanics and accessories, and the prize-giving podium.

The site will be animated with background music and an energetic host to encourage the participants at every stage of their competition.

For the standard and long-distance formats, the halfway point between loops 1 and 2 will take place on this site.

Saturday events – Youth trail races and duathlons :

All Saturday events will take place exclusively on the main EOP site, including all starts, finishes, post-race and transitions for these events.

Sunday events – Triathlons and duathlons:

The secondary site of the Lac Bromont beach will be used for the starts of the triathlon events on Sunday, including the open water swim segment and the T1 transition (swim →bike), as well as the starts of the duathlon events for their first run segment.

For triathlons:

Important, after the swim portion, participants will leave the beach by bike and will not return to the beach. The T2 transition, as well as the finish, will take place at the PÉO. The swimming equipment will be brought back by the organisation to the main site in the T2 transition zone to be collected at the end of the event. An identified bag will be given to each participant to put their swimming equipment in during their transition. It is very important to put all the equipment in the bag to avoid losing it. The organisers cannot be held responsible for any equipment lost if it is not put in the bags.

Participants in the triathlon events must cycle to the Lac Bromont beach via Chemin de Gaspé, an easy, continuous descent on a tarmac road of approximately 1.5 km. They should bring their swimming gear and T1 swim-to-bike transition equipment. If necessary, they can put their identified equipment on the shuttle bus or give it to an accompanying person who will take the shuttle bus.

Here is the pre-race sequence for participants in Sunday’s triathlon events:

  • Arrival at the main EOP site for parking
  • Welcome, registration
  • Collection of participant kit, timing chip and marking
  • Prepare the area for the T2 bike/run transition (⚠️ it is very important that everything is ready for the T2 transition before heading down to the lake; in the worst-case scenario, it would be possible to take the shuttle back up, but this would mean a significant loss of time).
  • Gather all your swimming gear and T1 transition equipment and head for the lake.
  • Cycle down to the beach at Lac Bromont
  • Preparing the T1 swim – bike transition area (⚠️ it is very important that the identified bag is ready to put all the swimming equipment in to avoid losing any)
  • Start of the swim at the Lac Bromont beach
  • T1 swim-bike transition at Lac Bromont beach and bike start
  • After the bike portion, the arrival at transition T2 to drop off the bike will take place at the Olympic Equestrian Park for the rest of the competition up to the finish line.
  • Collection of the bag identified with the swimming equipment at the end of the event in the transition area of the Olympic Equestrian Park.

For duathlons:

The duathlons will start from the Lac Bromont beach for the first running segment, which will take participants to the Olympic Equestrian Park transition zone. The 1st transition T1 will take place in the transition zone of the Olympic Equestrian Park, where the bikes will have been left.

Once the T1 and T2 transition zones at the Equestrian Park are ready, participants will have to go to the Lac Bromont beach, ready for their run (running shoes and race number), with the shuttle bus located at the exit of the PÉO parking lot.

Here is the pre-race sequence for participants in Sunday’s duathlon events:

  • Arrival at the main OEP site for parking
  • Welcome and registration
  • Collection of participant kit, timing chip and marking
  • Prepare the transition area T1 run → bike and T2 bike → run (⚠️ it is very important that everything is ready in the transition area at the PÉO before taking the shuttle to the lake; in the worst case, it would be possible to go back up by shuttle, but there would be a significant loss of time)
  • Get ready for the start of the 1st running leg
  • Take the shuttle bus to the Lac Bromont beach
  • Start of the 1st running segment at the Lac Bromont beach (course leading to the Olympic Equestrian Park)
  • Transition 1 run-bike at the Olympic Equestrian Park transition zone and start by bike
  • Arrival of the T2 bike at the Olympic Equestrian Park for the rest of the competition to the finish line

Spectator transport

A shuttle service will transport spectators between the 2 sites, to the Lac Bromont beach and back to the main site of the Olympic Equestrian Park. *No parking is available at the Lac Bromont beach.

SELECTIONS FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

XTERRA TriathlonWorld Championships

Winners in their category for the standard triathlon format have the opportunity to win a place at the 2026 XTERRA World Championships.

Each first place winner in each category at XTERRA Bromont will receive a certificate (by email in the days following the race). If you do not win your race, you may be invited by email in the weeks following the event. Some qualifying places will be awarded by a “roll down”.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Thunderstorm policy

Triathlon Québec’s rule book states that if lightning approaches the competition area within a 13 km radius, the race must be suspended. Thirty minutes after the last thunderclap, activities can resume. Since there is only a risk of scattered thunderstorms or a slight risk of isolated thunderstorms during the day, all activities are maintained. In the event of a thunderstorm, Triathlon Québec rules will be applied for everyone’s safety.

Should the situation persist, other measures could be applied, such as replacing the swim with a run (converting the triathlon to a duathlon), modifying the course or shortening the race. These options are not being considered at present.

In the event of event cancellation (unlikely at the time of writing), our policy will be applied and you will be notified of your compensation options within a few days.

Wearing a wetsuit

Please refer to the section of this guide dedicated to the wearing of wetsuits. Note that we anticipate that wetsuits may be permitted but not mandatory, but with unstable weather conditions, we ask you to plan for all eventualities, including the obligation to wear a wetsuit (unlikely but possible).

Heat

Despite the rain, it’s possible that you’ll have to deal with very hot weather. Be vigilant, measure your efforts carefully and, above all, plan to stay hydrated.

Sports events held outdoors carry the risk of having to adapt to the weather. In most situations, including those currently forecast, it’s a matter of being well prepared (rain or heat) and keeping the pleasure of participating in great events. In extreme situations, we’ll keep you safe.

TIME LIMIT FOR COMPLETING SEGMENTS

Time limits for completing a segment ensure the safety of participants and the logistics of the event. If a participant exceeds the time limit, they will not be able to start the next segment, they will be disqualified and will have to hand in their timing chip.

Saturday 23rd August

  • 1.45pm: 20km trail race starting at km 9
  • No time limit for the 5 and 10 km trail races
  • No time limit for the Youth Duathlons

Sunday 24th August

  • 10.45 : End of the 1st loop of the Standard and Long Distance bike race
  • 12.45pm: End of the bike and start of the race
  • 13:40 : End of the 1st loop of the standard and long distance race
  • 14:30 : End of race and competition

We can end a participant’s competition at any time, even if they are within the time limit, if we judge that their safety is at stake.

We ask you to let us know if you feel uncomfortable, to listen and to respect your own limits.

RETIREMENT DURING THE RACE

You must report any abandonment to the organization before leaving the site.

Be sure to inform a responsible person, not just a volunteer who may not have communication with us.

SAFETY

First aid

The XTERRA Bromont organisation takes the health and safety of its participants very seriously. To ensure a professional medical presence throughout the event, we have called on Action Trauma, experts in first-aid services at sporting events.

Their qualified team, supported by first responders trained as first aiders, will be on hand with all the equipment needed to intervene quickly if necessary. So you can take part with peace of mind.

To avoid injury during the event, here are a few tips to follow:

  • Unlike a road triathlon, the technical level of the bike course at an XTERRA doesn’t allow you to let go of the handlebars at any time. It’s best to plan to eat when you make your transitions or wait for a rolling section to eat or drink.
  • Be patient when overtaking on the bike course. Avoid rushing into areas that are not suitable for overtaking. This could result in a fall and ruin your triathlon and that of another competitor.
  • Be aware that the level of technical skill varies from one person to another. Politely ask for the right of way, favouring the left side of the track wherever possible. If someone asks you to pass, slow down or stop and clear the track on the requested side without putting yourself in danger.
  • In the days leading up to your event, take the time to reconnoitre the course. You’ll be able to identify the more technical areas and know how to tackle them safely!

If you or another participant becomes unwell or injured :

  • Quickly alert the first volunteer/first aid staff you see or an athlete near you so that they can notify medical staff of your condition. If they have to stay with you, send another athlete to inform the organisation so that first aid can come and look after you.
  • Move to a safe area as far as possible to avoid causing a collision.
  • Depending on your condition, the medical staff will take care of you and escort you back to the medical tent.

IMPORTANT: Each participant has a duty to come to the aid of another participant whose health or safety is threatened. Stay with the victim or make sure that someone can stay with him or her. Ask for help and notify a member of the organisation as soon as possible, either a patroller, a member of the medical team, a signaller or a volunteer at the refreshment station.

Enjoy the race and have fun!

TIMING

Race timing will be provided by Sportstats. You will have a reusable chip on a Velcro strap. Make sure you wear your chip on your ankle (right or left). The chip is to be collected on the morning of your race only. It must be handed in at the finish.

Results will be posted live on www.sportstats.ca.

RENTALS

BIKING

We have 3 local partners who offer the possibility of hiring your mountain or gravel bike. Please contact them directly to book:

WETSUIT

It will be possible to rent a wetsuit by contacting La Boutique du Lac.

WATER TEMPERATURE, WETSUIT AND COURSE

As weather is always an uncertain factor for any outdoor event, it is very important to plan for any eventuality. Triathlon Québec’s technical delegate has full discretion to resolve any problems that may arise during the competition. In particular, he may modify the events and distances as he sees fit, while taking into account the safety of the athletes and the fairness of the competition.

SWIMMING

In general, wetsuits are permitted but not mandatory at XTERRA Bromont. However, with the warm weather we’re experiencing and the later date of the event, it’s also likely that wetsuits will be prohibited. In an unlikely but possible situation, wetsuits could be mandatory. The final decision is made by the Triathlon Québec official 1 hour before the start of the first race of the day. You can consult all the rules by clicking on this link.

Please note that you will not be allowed to start with a wetsuit if it is prohibited or without a wetsuit if it is mandatory. Should either of these situations arise, it will still be possible to change your duathlon registration by notifying the registration table no later than 10 minutes after the wetsuit announcement.

TRAILS

In the event of rain, especially torrential rain, the organizing committee, in agreement with Parc des Sommets and Bromont Montagne d’Expériences, reserves the right to modify the routes if the safety of participants and the preservation of the trails are at stake.

VOLUNTEERS

Weekends are overloaded with great events like ours, and this means that volunteers are more divided between several causes and events. We still need a few volunteers to complete our team. If you have a companion who would be interested in helping out during the weekend, even if only for a few hours, we’d be very grateful.

If you’d like to help out, or have a companion who can, it’s easy: just fill in the form on our website https://xterraquebec.com/benevoles/.

Is your friend or spouse taking part? Why not become a volunteer and contribute to the success of the event!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

We’d like to thank you for your participation, and hope you have a great weekend with us.

Thank you to all our valued volunteers, and to the spectators who came to cheer on friends, athletes and our youngsters during the event.

We mustn’t forget our partners, who contribute to the success of this event! Thank them when you see them!

We’re always open to your comments and suggestions. We’d love to hear from you.

Enjoy XTERRA Bromont!!!

The trails will not be for the exclusive use of the event; they will be open and shared with other users of the mountain. Other users will be informed of the event and will be asked to give priority to participants.

Volunteers on the course will remind you of these instructions at trail intersections.

We ask you to be respectful and cordial at all times on the trails, with other users, volunteers and other participants.

If you come across or wish to overtake someone, politely ask permission to pass when it is safe and appropriate to do so. You must announce your intentions and be patient before overtaking.

It is possible to train at any time on the courses between now and the event, except for the sections on the grassy areas of the Olympic Equestrian Park. Please avoid these sections during your training sessions before the event, in order to respect our agreement with our partners and ensure good cooperation for years to come. Stay on the official Parc des Sommets and Bromont Montagne d’Expériences trails.

Please note that the trails will be signposted from Thursday 21 August.
